| Quotes | "Big words for a mouse in a lion's den." "This mortal world, I feel it in my bones when I try to sleep. The iron, the cities, they seep into my blood. It poisons me, zolotoi. My candle burns at both ends now...it is fading fast." "We are not evil, no more than fire is evil or wind is evil. Sometimes these things do damage. But this is not malice. They simply are." "I remember enjoying playing the monster, in the early days. I stalked the darkness outside their campfires, feeding off their fear and even causing their demise. But never the children. I could never hurt them." |

Background
Daughter of Lilith, Maid of Desolation and Demon of the Night Winds, Ksenija has existed in the shadows of civilization as a primordial predator for as long as human memory can recall. Vampire of the soul, and a creature of mirrors and magic, she perfected passing unnoticed through the world. She fell in love with Russia during its Imperial days, and made her home in Moscow, then St. Petersburg after its construction on the sea.
Eventually, Ksenija threw her lot in with Vladimir Lenin and his fellow communists, hoping to change Russia for the better. Originally, Ksenija worked with Lenin in the army, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and working as the head of Military Intelligence. She stepped down after the Communist Party seized power, preferring to act as an agent on the front lines. In the end, she ended up serving as a spy and member of the secret police, first in the NKVD, then the KGB, and finally the SVR. However, her constant dwelling in mortal cities has taken a great toll on her, weakening her magic and severing her remaining ties to the wilderness. She is dangerous more for her experience and method of sustaining herself rather than wielding any particular powers.
Ksenija is the archetypal agent--she lives out of a suitcase, doesn't usually draw attention to herself, and has no one at home to miss her.
Most of Ksenija's personal and work history is classified. Aside from her occasional security work for Russian officials and/or their families (jobs she generally enjoys), her name is never mentioned in the papers or news reports. She can walk through Moscow or D.C. alike without being bothered, though often that requires a disguise. Ksenija tends to operate without a lot of oversight, but always with a great deal of forethought. She has a knack for improvisation and passing beneath the notice of others.
Ksenija has a very complicated professional history, both feared for being an enforcer of government will and lauded for her work protecting Russia. She is as committed as agents come, dedicated to the security of her adopted homeland. She lives a very private life out of necessity, probably because most people tend to freak out and leave when they find out what she really is.
Off duty, Ksenija is often at a Russian embassy somewhere nice around the globe or in Moscow at headquarters. She can usually be identified by her relatively casual dress compared to everyone else working there. She maintains a small apartment in Moscow but is there so rarely she might as well not bother.
At present, Ksenija has finally cycled back to the original name she went by back in the days of Imperial Russia. She is working as head of security and primary aide for the Russian Ambassador to the United States and is the head of Directorate S in North America. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of the Russian Federation, her work as a member of the secret police has been sealed...just so people don't get uncomfortable.
